CSC faculty all have interests in the science of complex systems. Rundle, for example, focuses on complex, driven earth systems, with applications that include scaling processes and forecasting earthquakes and their associated risks. Crutchfield, a pioneer in chaos theory, developed the area of computational mechanics to uncover the patterns that emerge in complex systems. D'Souza is developing the new science of networks and exploring how to understand interacting components in systems.
